During the 1970s, amid an oil crisis, Peugeot committed to creating an aerodynamic and efficient car. This led to the birth of the Citroën CX. At the time of its launch, back in 1974, it was considered a bold and stylish vehicle, capable of offering innovative solutions to the problems of the era.

When the Citroën CX was presented at the Paris Motor Show, the French car stood out for its comfort and road handling. That same year, it won several awards, including the thoroughly deserved ‘European Car of the Year’ title, thanks to its innovative styling. The revolution it caused led Vigo to take on part of the model’s production between 1976 and 1980. More than 17,000 units were produced at the Galician plant.

Despite the fuel shortages at the time, the Citroën CX offered features focused on low consumption, including an efficient engine and the use of diesel. As an example, the French vehicle managed to complete the journey from Paris to Nice without refuelling (930 km). It was also the first French car to use an ABS braking system. The level of enthusiasm for this car reached such heights that former French President Jacques Chirac chose it for his inauguration in 1995.

The Citroën CX was a sales success, with more than 1 million units sold by 1991. Although more than 30 years have passed since it was discontinued, it remains relevant to the direction Citroën would take. Its legacy can be seen in concepts such as the Citroën C5 X. This can also be seen in the vehicle’s comfort and the driver’s access to information while driving. All these factors have ensured that this vehicle has stood the test of time and remains one of the most memorable models from the French brand.
