Every driver is responsible for ensuring that their vehicle is roadworthy and has passed its MOT test with a favourable result. At present, driving with an expired MOT is classified as a serious or very serious offence and may result in a financial penalty of up to 500 euros.

In this blog, we explain what the MOT test is, when your vehicle needs to undergo it and which components must be in perfect condition to pass the inspection.

What is an MOT test?

The MOT test (Technical Vehicle Inspection) is a compulsory procedure carried out periodically to assess and verify the technical condition and safety of vehicles. Its main purpose is to ensure that vehicles travelling on the roads meet the safety and emissions standards established by the authorities, thereby protecting drivers, passengers and other road users, as well as preserving the environment.

When and how should the MOT test be carried out?

In Spain, the frequency and deadlines for the MOT test vary depending on the type of vehicle.

For example, new private vehicles are exempt from their first MOT test until 4 years have passed from the date of registration. From the age of 4, they must undergo an MOT test every 2 years until they are 10 years old. From then on, the MOT test is required annually.

As for new motorcycles, they are exempt from their first MOT test until 4 years have passed from their date of registration. From the age of 4, they must undergo an MOT test every 2 years.

Light commercial vehicles (vans and similar vehicles) must undergo an MOT test every 2 years from their fourth year of age.

Remember that these deadlines and intervals may be subject to changes in legislation, so it is essential to check the up-to-date information when your vehicle's MOT test is due. You should also bear in mind that it is the owner's responsibility to keep the inspection schedule up to date and comply with the established deadlines, in order to avoid possible penalties for driving with an expired or invalid MOT.

What is checked during the MOT test?

MOT inspectors check a range of technical and safety aspects of the vehicle to ensure that it complies with the standards established by Spanish legislation. The items inspected during the MOT test may vary slightly depending on the type of vehicle, but the following are some of the general components that are usually checked:

  • Pollutant emissions: Exhaust emissions are measured to ensure that the vehicle complies with the limits permitted by environmental regulations.
  • Brakes: The condition and operation of the brakes are checked, including the ABS braking system in vehicles fitted with one.
  • Lights: All of the vehicle's exterior lights are checked to ensure that they work correctly, including headlights, sidelights, indicators, brake lights and reversing lights.
  • Tyres: The condition of the tyres is checked, ensuring that they have adequate tread depth and do not show any damage that could compromise safety.
  • Suspension: The vehicle's suspension is inspected to ensure that there are no problems that could affect its stability and handling.
  • Steering: The condition of the steering is checked, ensuring that there is no play or wear that could affect control of the vehicle.
  • Axles and wheels: The axles and wheels are examined to verify their alignment and ensure that they are correctly balanced.
  • Seat belts: The condition and operation of the seat belts are checked, ensuring that they can be fastened and unfastened correctly.
  • Mirrors: The condition and positioning of the exterior and interior rear-view mirrors are checked.
  • Additional safety equipment: Other safety components are inspected, such as airbags, child seat anchorage systems, windscreen wipers and the windscreen.
  • Documentation: The vehicle's documentation is checked to ensure that everything is in order, including insurance and the vehicle registration document.

It is important for the vehicle to meet all these requirements in order to pass the MOT test successfully. If defects that do not comply with the established requirements are identified during the inspection, the vehicle may fail, and the owner will have to rectify the problems and undergo the inspection again to obtain a favourable report.
