“With the M 1000 XR prototype, we are offering an initial preview of BMW Motorrad’s third M model during our anniversary year. We have developed the M 1000 XR, or M XR for short, from the current S 1000 XR, S 1000 RR and M 1000 RR, as a long-distance sports motorcycle with outstanding capability and supersport riding dynamics, both on the road and on the track.” Dominik Blass, Product Manager.
BMW M 1000 XR: The sports motorcycle for long journeys, meeting the highest demands on winding roads, touring trips and race circuits
The letter M symbolises racing success and the fascination of high-performance BMW models. It is designed for customers with particularly high expectations in terms of performance, exclusivity and individuality. In 2019, BMW Motorrad introduced the successful M range strategy from its cars to its motorcycles and has offered M and M Performance equipment ever since. In the years that followed, BMW Motorrad unveiled its first two standalone M models: the M RR and the M R.
During the anniversary year celebrating “100 years of BMW Motorrad” – and almost 100 years of motorsport tradition – the M 1000 XR prototype provides a preview of a supersport motorcycle that masters a range of disciplines: road riding, long-distance touring and track use, with equal composure and a level of performance previously unknown in this segment.
The in-line four-cylinder engine with BMW ShiftCam technology and low weight delivers segment-leading performance
The four-cylinder engine from the BMW S 1000 RR supersport motorcycle, featuring BMW ShiftCam technology, has been used as the basis, with modifications to the valve timing and lift. It delivers more than 147 kW (200 hp), while the motorcycle has a DIN unladen weight of just 223 kg at full load. Its chassis, aerodynamics and control electronics have been designed for road use, long-distance touring and fast laps on the track. The new M XR opens up new dimensions in riding dynamics as a crossover motorcycle in a sports bike segment previously reserved for pure-bred superbikes. The M Competition package, available as an optional factory extra, enables further weight reduction and even greater riding dynamism. The M XR prototype has a top speed of around 280 km/h.
M winglets: Superior riding stability, a reduced tendency to lift the front wheel and earlier acceleration thanks to aerodynamic downforce.
During the development of the M XR prototype, aerodynamics was a key element alongside the powertrain and suspension technology. The aim was to ensure superior stability, even at high speeds, despite the engine’s increased power. The winglets are used specifically to achieve the best possible contact between the road surface and the tyres, particularly during acceleration and at high speeds. The additional load on the front wheel counteracts the tendency for the front wheel to lift under acceleration, meaning the traction control system has less work to do. This allows more drive power to be transferred to the front wheel, ensuring better motorcycle control, particularly in Supersport mode.
M brakes with a radial hand-brake master cylinder for optimum braking performance on the track and in high-performance riding modes.
The new M XR features M brakes, just like the M RR and M R. These brakes were developed using the experience gained from racing brake systems and BMW Motorrad’s racing experience in the Superbike World Championship. The M brake callipers feature a blue anodised finish alongside the famous M logo.
BMW Motorrad will publish more information about the new BMW M 1000 XR during the second half of 2023.
